Watch the LANAP® Laser Procedure

The Stages of the LANAP® Protocol

The LANAP® laser protocol makes it possible for Dr. Omid Fard and Dr. Ellie Dary to save loose teeth that may otherwise have to be extracted. The steps of this minimally invasive gum disease treatment include:

  • Pocket Depth Measurement
  • Bacterial Removal with the Laser
  • Calculus Removal
  • Laser Used to Create a Clot
  • Gum Tissue Compressed
  • Bite Adjusted

A.) Measurement of gum tissue pockets. The first step of laser gum disease treatment is measuring the periodontal pockets around the gums with a probe. This tells us how much loss of attachment has occurred.

B.) Bacteria removed with the laser. A pulsed laser light is passed over the tissue to remove diseased tissue from the gum pockets and kill bacteria that causes gum disease. Since the laser light is not absorbed in water, healthy tissue and bone remain intact.

C.) Calculus removal. Calculus (or tartar) can be removed from the root surfaces of the teeth using small ultrasonic scalers.

D.) Clot formation. We can stimulate soft tissue and bone formation by passing the laser over the gums a second time. This creates a sticky seal around the mouth and promotes healthy healing.

E.) Tissue compression. The gum tissue is recompressed against the root surfaces of the teeth, and we do not need to place sutures.

F.) Bite adjustment. We may need to adjust your bite to make sure there is no trauma to the teeth, especially in areas of significant bone loss.

The LANAP® protocol continues to be an attractive alternative to traditional gum surgery because it is a minimally invasive procedure and does not negatively affect the gum line.
